Birthday Poems
Whenever birthdays of near and dear
ones come, there is this constant
racking of brains to come up with
suitable lines and verses to express
our deep-felt emotions. Then one
wishes one were a poet, to be able
to express one's emotions in
suitable lines is surely a gift. I
have searched far and wide for that
one birthday poem which would be
able to express our finest emotions
and be suitable for anyone. I
personally find Christina Rossetti's
poem herein given as one which
affected me deeply, it is the
birthday poem for me.
My heart is like a singing bird
Whose nest is in a watered shoot;
My heart is like an apple tree
Whose boughs are bent with thickset
fruit;
My heart is like a rainbow shell
That paddles in a purple sea;
My heart is gladder than all these
Because my love is come to me.
Raise me a dais of silk and down;
Hang it with vair and purple dyes;
Carve it in doves and pomegranates,
And peacocks with a hundred eyes;
Work it in gold and silver grapes,
In leaves and silver fleur-de-lys;
Because the birthday of my life
Is come, my love, is come to me.
Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
