Hearing loss is one of the most
common conditions affecting older
adults. Roughly one third of
Americans over age 60, and 40 to 50
percent of people over age 75 have
hearing loss. More men than women
report having hearing loss.
Hearing loss can run in families, or
it can be the result of injury and
trauma, medications, infection,
disease, such as high blood
pressure, or long-term exposure to
loud noise. About 30 million workers
are exposed to dangerous noise
levels on their jobs.
Symptoms
Symptoms of hearing loss include:
Dizziness and imbalance
Fluid draining from the ear
Unresponsiveness to low-pitched
sounds
Becoming inattentive to the speech
of others
