Neck pain
Up to 34% of the population
experiences some neck pain each
year. Causes of neck pain include
abnormalities of the bone or joints,
such as fracture, arthritis, or
tumor. If the injury involves a disc
of the spinal column, you may feel
numbness, tingling and/or weakness
in the arms or legs as well as in
the neck. Pain in the soft tissues
(muscles, tendons, and ligaments) is
the most common cause of neck pain
and is usually due to an acute or a
chronic muscle strain.
Whiplash injury is generally caused
by a sudden acceleration or
deceleration in speed that forces
the neck to extend beyond 45 degrees
of the body. A rear-end collision at
speeds greater than 20 miles per
hour can cause significant whiplash
injury. Symptoms of whiplash may be
delayed for 24 hours after the
initial trauma.
