Silica & Silicosis
Silicosis is a lung disease most
often contracted by persons who
worked in a sandblasting or foundry
operations where sand is blasted
onto a surface, broken into minute
particles which then float in the
air and are ultimately ingested by
the workers. Those microscopic
particles, called silica, lodge into
the workers' lungs causing lung
abnormalities. Similarly, workers
exposed to silica in foundries,
where the process of making
silica-laden cores and molds also
produces fine silica particles that
linger in the air for hours, can
contract silicosis.
Silica has been classified by the
International Agency for Research on
Cancer (IARC) as a known human
carcinogen, so workers with silica
exposure should have yearly chest
x-rays for early diagnoses.
In addition to lung cancer, exposure
to sufficient doses of silica can
lead to rheumatoid arthritis and
various anti-immune diseases, so it
is important that anyone who has
worked in these occupational
environments contact their
physicians as soon as possible. s
